Byzantine Basilica

The ruins of an early Byzantine three-nave basilica from the 6th century are located on a rocky plateau above the confluence of the Kosanica and Toplica rivers, right next to the Niš–Priština main road, below Marina Tower. These are the remains of a complex of buildings, with the church as the largest structure in the center.

The church is known by several names: the Latin or Marko’s Church, the Greek Church, or the Byzantine Basilica. Archaeological research confirmed the existence of several construction phases, while the remains of the church were conserved in 1948. The church itself is a three-nave basilica with a built tomb located in the southwestern corner of the southern nave. In addition to the church, the complex also includes two square buildings and a large southern courtyard.

Archaeological excavations at this site also confirmed the existence of a necropolis. The Byzantine Basilica has been declared a cultural monument.
