Church of Saint Petka

The Church of Saint Petka is located in the village of Mačkovac, on the fifth kilometer of the Kuršumlija–Blace intermunicipal road, on the left-hand side.

At a large public gathering held on February 27, 2004, the decision was made to build the church, and a church committee was formed. With the blessing of the then Bishop of Niš, and now Serbian Patriarch His Holiness Irinej, construction began. The church was built through voluntary donations and voluntary work by local residents. It is also important to mention the numerous contributions from donors, especially private companies from the municipality of Kuršumlija. Part of the funding was also provided by the Municipality of Kuršumlija.

The church is a single-nave structure. Its base is 13.5 meters long and 7.32 meters wide. An octagonal dome with a diameter of 3.5 meters rises above the nave area. The height of the semi-dome is 1.75 meters, while the total height of the building is 10.30 meters, excluding the cross.

A bell tower with a bell was built on the southern side of the church.

Since the building is of recent construction, it is in very good condition. The exterior façade has been completed, while the interior has been plastered and prepared for fresco painting. An iconostasis has also been installed but has not yet been painted, which is the reason why the church is not yet fully operational.

It should also be noted that, according to written records, the foundations of this holy site were visited at the end of the 19th century by the famous Austrian travel writer Felix Kanitz.

The feast day of the Church of Saint Petka is celebrated on August 8.
